James Lallemand is an artist whose sly message emerges
equally from his boldly defiant surrealism and his bland
mockery of commercial art. The two genres have little in
common conceptually, but a consistent, sardonic spirit
informs the artist's work in both.

In the tradition of 60's pop art, Lallemand focuses on
familiar and trivial objects of our commercial society, and
by simply isolating items of our daily life which we have
ceased to observe, he invests them with iconic weight and
significance, forcing a reexamination of our material
values.

Composed with a sure sense of design, Lallemand's
paintings distribute color in discreet masses to form
handsome, almost abstract patterns. This confident
graphic control of his visual material complements the
content and it's message. As the magic realism issues,
under it's whimsical humor, a challenge to our reason, the
bilboard-like pop art, with all it's homey cheer, contains
an ironic and disquieting suggestion of the emptiness
which lies so close to the surface in our society.
